Take Action Now!

Now that work on the State Budget is completed, lawmakers will devote the remaining weeks of the legislative session to a short list of legislative issues. One of these issues is referred to as "mandate relief" -- an indirect way of saying "program and service cuts." In order to reduce the costs to school districts, public school advocates are pressing lawmakers to relieve them of the mandate to transport religious and independent school children up to 15 miles and to reduce the mandates that provide religious and independent school students with access to certain special education services. Although lawmakers have thus far resisted the public school proposals, pressure is increasing on the governor and legislature to provide some form of mandate relief. We simply cannot permit the fiscal troubles of school districts to be relieved at the expense of our children and families. Already, our Catholic school families get barely any services for the school taxes they pay, while saving the state billions each year.

It is very important that you take a moment to send this pre-written, editable e-mail at the link below to the governor and your elected representatives urging them to continue to oppose service and program cuts to our Catholic school students. And don't forget to follow us on Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news.

Additionally, if you go on this website (www.verizon.com/heroessweeps) and vote for your school you will have a chance to win $10,000 or $5,000 for St. Patrick School. This drive has a three fold mission.

It will help to deliver food to Long Islanders in need

Catholic school funding increased
Please thank Gov. Cuomo and legislators today

We are very pleased to report that state lawmakers agreed to a 2012-13 State Budget that includes the restoration of the Comprehensive Attendance Policy reimbursement formula for Catholic schools. The budget also includes a $20 million increase in reimbursement funding and a process for beginning to address the past-due reimbursement to our schools. Much of the credit for this accomplishment goes to each of you who took the time to respond to our  action alerts. The most recent action alert generated nearly 20,000 e-mail messages to the Governor and legislators urging that the CAP formula be restored. You should be proud knowing that, in working together, we achieved this critically important objective.

It is equally important, however, that Gov. Cuomo and your legislators are thanked for their work -- so we urge you to take another brief moment to send a thank you e-mail, which is pre-written and editable for your convenience. If you are a Catholic school parent, you may wish to note it in the body of the email message.
